7 SEO mistakes costing Quebec SMBs customers
Local SEO isn't witchcraft. But across Quebec SMB websites I've analyzed since 2024, almost all make the same 7 mistakes. Here's the exact checklist, in impact order, with how to fix each without rebuilding the site.
Mistake #1 — No Google Business profile (or abandoned)
In Quebec as elsewhere, a significant share of local commercial searches goes through Google Maps before the website (see the BrightLocal Consumer Review Survey studies). Without an active Google Business profile, you're invisible in those searches. You lose customers who'll never know you exist.
Fix:
- Go to google.com/business
- Create or claim your profile
- Fill 100% of fields (hours, services, photos, description)
- Ask 3-5 reviews from your best real clients
- Post 1 update per month minimum
Impact: visible in 4-8 weeks. Often 2-3x your local leads.
Mistake #2 — Too generic keywords
Targeting "web developer"? You compete with 50,000 sites worldwide. Zero chance ranking. Target "web developer Montreal", "Shopify developer Laval", "SMB web agency Quebec" — specific and local.
Fix:
- Identify 5-10 highly specific expressions for your niche + city
- Rewrite titles and meta descriptions including them
- Create one page per city/region if you serve multiple (Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, etc.)
Mistake #3 — Default title and meta description tags
"Home — My Site" as the homepage title. Worst possible title. Google uses this as your billboard in search results.
Optimal format:
- Title (max 60 chars): "[Main benefit] | [City/Region] — [Brand name]"
- Meta description (max 155 chars): one sentence answering the searcher's implicit question + a micro-CTA
Example: "Custom websites for Montreal SMBs — Delivered in 2-3 weeks | PrimeDev Studios". Clickable.
Mistake #4 — Slow site (especially mobile)
The majority of web traffic is mobile (see Statcounter Global Stats). Google harshly penalizes slow mobile sites since 2021. Mobile PageSpeed under 50 = invisible to Google on mobile.
Fix:
- Test on pagespeed.web.dev
- On WordPress: install WP Rocket + optimize images (WebP)
- Score still under 70? Theme is probably too heavy. Change theme or migrate to custom (see WordPress vs custom).
Mistake #5 — No Schema.org local markup
Schema.org is invisible code telling Google "I'm a local business, here's my address, hours, category". Without it, Google guesses — often wrong.
Essential schema to add in your homepage <head>:
LocalBusinessorProfessionalService(by type)BreadcrumbListon internal pagesFAQPageon your FAQ page

Mistake #6 — No local and thematic content
Google rewards sites demonstrating expertise on a specific local topic. A "Home + Services + Contact" page set isn't enough. You need substantial text content.
What to write:
- Minimum 1 blog article per month (like this one)
- Topics targeting real customer questions
- Natural mention of cities/regions you serve
- 800-1,500 words per article — not fluff, real content
Visible effect: 3-6 months after publishing. Content SEO is long-term investment.
Mistake #7 — No tracking, so no improvement
If you don't know how many visitors you have, where they come from and what they do, you're flying blind. Every SEO decision becomes a guess.
Essential free tools:
- Google Search Console: see traffic-driving keywords, spot indexing errors
- Google Analytics OR Plausible (simpler, privacy-first): understand behavior
- Microsoft Clarity (free): heatmaps and session recordings
Total setup: ~1hr. No reason not to do it.
Fix only 3 mistakes — #1 (Google Business), #4 (mobile speed), #7 (tracking) — and you'll likely see measurable improvement in 8-12 weeks. SEO rewards consistency over complexity.
The "guaranteed SEO" trap
Beware agencies promising "first page Google in 30 days". Technically impossible to guarantee — Google changes its algorithm constantly and competition varies. Any guaranteed ranking promise is a sales lie.
What's realistic: measurable 30-80% increase in organic traffic over 6-12 months, with sustained, honest work. No more, no less.
